Base by base: How to Achieve Full Glam

Makeup is an art. Unfortunately, in art, there are fundamentals you have to know before fully testing your abilities and playing with multiple products.  One of these rules that I learned years into doing my makeup focused on when to use silicone versus water-based products.  A rule that would’ve saved me a lot of money, because as I experimented with makeup, I bought the first products I saw celebrities using.  What I didn't realize at the time is that all of these celebrities had different makeup styles and were using products with completely different bases.

Think about your makeup routine and how many products need to work together to create your base.  Your primer, foundation, concealer, contour, and blush should work together seamlessly in order to have the base you want.  Trying new products is always a process of trial and error; however, there is something you should look into before testing a new product: the base of the product.  Every product you’re using should be the same base; that's why sometimes you try a new bronzer that people swear by, but it ruins your makeup and doesn’t blend with the rest of your look.  This is also why sometimes it can be better to use multiple products from the same brand together to ensure they’re all the same base.

Water-based products tend to be lighter weight and less coverage.  If you are trying to achieve the “clean girl” or “no makeup makeup” look, water-based is the way to go.  Think of Melody Miles and Hailey Bieber; they are perfect examples of using water-based products that melt together to give a super natural look. Water-based is also often better for dry skin, as many of the products are hydrating.  My favorite water-based products right now are Refy’s water blush and bronzer pots.  They give you the most natural and blendable blush and bronzed look.

As for silicone-based products, they are more “full glam” and full coverage.  Silicone products usually last longer and are perfect for big events and a night out.  Silicone-based looks would be more similar to Nikkei Tutorials and Makeup by Mario. I would recommend Haus Labs foundation and Makeup by Mario products as my favorite silicone-based.  All of these products give you a seamless full glam that will last all night.

After differentiating the two types of products, I hope you guys have a better understanding of why certain products don’t work well together. Unfortunately, you can’t use every viral product together, which is nothing short of upsetting.  I’d recommend viewing tutorials by artists like Makeup by Mario, Nikkie Tutorials, Melody Miles, and Hailey Bieber so you can see these products work their magic in both styles of makeup!
