Megan Stalter And The Comeback Of Outrageous Women

We all have that one YouTube video we watch over and over again. Maybe it’s a guilty pleasure, a comfort, or something that never fails to make you laugh. For me, it’s re-watching actress and comedian Megan Stalter on fellow comedian Brittany Broski’s medieval talk show, Royal Court. It is an absolute treat to watch two comedic geniuses riff off each other so effortlessly. And when I say genius, I mean genius.
Megan Stalter is undoubtedly becoming a pillar in the comedic scene. And she's doing it by being absolutely outrageous.
Stalter began improv acting in her early twenties and soon after began posting videos online, coining it The Megan Stalter Show. Her mainstream claim to fame came from playing over-the-top assistant, Kayla, in the Emmy award winning series Hacks and starring as Jessica in Netflix's Too Much, created by Lena Dunham.
However, her humor is not only on, but also off screen. Whether constantly in a “bit”, making a splash with an award show outfit, or giving a speech where she randomly breaks out into song, Stalter makes her presence known.
Some of her most iconic looks could be considered her (literal) Diet Coke box dress for the Las Culturistas Awards, her exact recreations of fellow celebrity red carpet fits or most recently, her clad head-to-toe in gold paint and wings as the Emmy award itself.
Stalter, unsurprisingly, gets a lot of pushback from the internet. Society's distaste for loud, funny women is unfortunately nothing new.
She’s “too much”, if you will.
But that is exactly what makes her one of the best.
She embraces the awkward, she never backs down from a bit, and she uses the internet like it's her personal diary. Not to mention her ability to give any talk show host a run for their money.
Stalter is the perfect comedian and exactly what we need to see more of. She reminds me of some of the best and most outrageous of them all: Amy Poler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Rachel Dratch, and so many more (seriously, the list of iconic female comedians goes on).
That is one thing I truly hope the newer generations learn to appreciate and embrace an outrageous woman. Like it or not, they have always been here, and I am so glad we are getting to see more of them.
