Slope Core: Looking Hot While The U.S. Is Freezing

In case you live under a rock, the U.S. is freezing (while the rest of the world stays unusually toasty, might I add). As climate change rears its ugly head once again, it can be hard to stay chic while enduring Arctic temperatures.

Stylish looks from everyone’s winter trip to Aspen have been relentlessly badgering your feed, but you can’t sport that look if you’re not strolling around a cozy ski town, right?

Wrong!

This straight-off-the-mountain look can and should be explored by everyone freezing their ass off this season, and we’re calling it slope core. Here is your official guide to looking like a pro in the snow, even if you’re nowhere near a mountain.

Two words: Chunky. Boots.

If you have some dope-looking snow boots, even better. Puffer boots, prominent laces, chunky heels, faux fur boots, or a pair of UGGS (especially if they’re platform). With boots being an eternal staple in winter apparel, this will always be your best bet to pull this look together.

One item you have to get right for this look is the pants. What you’re looking for is something that gives snow pants without actually being snow pants. While wearing snow pants might be acceptable in ski towns, you risk receiving judgmental stares doing this anywhere else. Cargo pants, puffy pants, parachute pants, and different flared styles give the illusion of snow gear without the impracticalness. Unfortunately, jeans are unacceptable for bottom-wear. Nothing against jeans; they just don’t belong in slope core.

Parkas are a definite yes. You’re looking for something resembling a snow jacket similar to the pants, but that may not be exactly what you want. You probably won’t get as many judgmental stares as you would walking around in snow pants; it’s just not necessary (unless you are embarking on a snow-related activity or reading this from Alaska). Parka jackets give off snow jacket vibes, and the immense variety makes it easy to mix and match. Oversized windbreakers are another excellent option, keeping you warm in the wind and giving off an 80s ski hottie vibe. Puffer jackets will never fail to complete this look, an essential item in ski attire, and will keep you feeling cozy while looking cool. A puffer vest will give the same energy without being over the top if you’re in the (somewhat) warmer parts of the country.

Crewnecks, tight-fit tees, and long sleeves are another perfect option for those in the southern states, or even if you’re heading out to the bar and would rather not sweat once the alcohol hits and the dancing begins. If you have a chic crew neck, you can always make this the center of your sweet new snowboarder style. With the tees, you’re going for a thermal base layer look. Utilize your cool pants and accessories if you’re not wearing a jacket over the top.

While we’re on the topic of accessories, there is so much fun to be had with this: ear warmers, scarves, gloves, even neck warmers. I know you have that one beanie in your closet you love but never wear; here’s your excuse to take that bad boy out! It is a classic accessory to any winter outfit that never fails to save a bad hair day. Bonus points for braids or pigtails under your beanie; rock that sporty look!

While we all pine for the sun and 80-degree weather, you might find joy in the remainder of your winter season fits. Who said you have to dress like a bore just because it’s frosty? Stick to these slope core styling tips; they’ll never guess you didn’t just come from rippin’ down a mountain.
