The Best Fashions from the 2024 Academy Awards

There is always that one time of year that people get a kick out of. Some people enjoy the holiday season, some enjoy the end of the school year because that means it is summer, not me. My favorite time of year? Award show season.

The Grammys, The Golden Globes, or The Emmy.  All of them. However, nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever top The Academy Awards. Showcasing the best of the best from the year prior, the Academy Awards have it all. Awards! Live performances! And (usually) a funny host! Best of all? The fashion! I want to highlight and talk about three of my favorite looks from the Academy Awards, seen on Anya Taylor-Joy, Lily Gladstone, and America Ferrera.

The reason I love the fashions of award shows so much is because they hold so much history. This is evident in the dress that “Dune 2” star Anya Taylor-Joy wore. Her Dior gown was inspired by two famed archived dresses from the Dior Fall and Winter 1949-1950 Haute Couture Collection. The bodice details on Taylor-Joy’s dress were pulled from the “Venus” gown, while the scalloped shape of the dress itself was modeled after the “Junon” gown from the Dior collection. Curator of the “Fashioning San Francisco” exhibit, Laura Camerlengo, told The San Francisco Chronicle that Taylor-Joy’s gown is a “reinterpretation of both sister dresses”.

“Killers of the Flower Moon'' star, Lily Gladstone, gave a nod to their indigenous heritage with their custom-made Gucci dress. The midnight-blue gown featured a cape adorned with 216 quilted petals, all handsewn by artists from the Oneida reservation in Wisconsin. “Quillwork reflects the longest legacy of living craftsmanship in my corner of Indian Country,” she says. “It is hugely culturally significant to so many nations, Blackfeet included. I grew up gazing at quillwork in many forms; in our headdresses, our regalia. The first pair of earrings I ever bought myself were quillwork, made by Bob Tailfeathers from back home.” Gladstone told Vogue on the red carpet.

“Barbie” star America Ferrera stunned on the red carpet with her custom-made metallic pink Versace gown. After opting for black and neutral tones for the film’s press tour, Ferrera said farewell to “Barbie” in the best way possible. “America represents grace, honesty, and power—for me, this is the essence of Versace and the essence of empowered women today,” designer Donatella Versace said in a Harper's Bazaar interview. “Her voice is such a powerful one in Barbie, resonating with women around the world. I admire her hugely as an actor and am honored she has chosen Atelier Versace.”

This year’s Academy Awards had some of the best, most memorable, and iconic fashions I have ever seen for an award show. Each look is given so much thought, and each tests the limits of fashion. I am looking forward to seeing what fashions come about next year.
