Tips and Tricks for Adding a Pop of Color to Your Living Space

Adding life to your apartment may seem like an extremely daunting task, especially when you are a college student renting, and the go-to of painting the walls is off the table. Many people make Pinterest boards of all their favorite décor ideas, but in reality, they seldom follow through with the decorating. This is likely because many people are intimidated when an idea is complicated and expensive. However, just adding one key item will bring that pop of color and life to your apartment that you've been looking for. Here are some great ideas that won't break the bank:

Add a colorful tapestry

These are often seen as a dorm room staple, but there are no rules that say you can't hang one in your living room! They are usually big enough to cover almost the entire wall, so it can be a way of creating an accent wall without the hefty fine or mess of painting. These often have fun patterns or funny sayings on them, allowing you to personalize your living space while you add that pop of color.

Throw some pillows in

Throw pillows may seem simple, but they are an incredibly inexpensive way to add the right amount of color into an otherwise neutral room. Getting any sort of pillow, whether it be a solid color or a fun pattern, can increase the energy and give the room a better vibe. Not to mention, it will make your couch a little cozier!

Get creative with a colorful calendar

Sometimes it can get stressful looking at your calendar and seeing how busy you are, but having it be the main focus of your room makes sure you never miss an event. Fun dry-erase calendars can be bought at a store, or to save some money, you can make your own. All you'll need is a big enough picture frame and some paint chips from your local craft or hardware store. Then, just glue them down to the mat that came with the frame, slip it back into the frame, and use the glass as a dry-erase board like the example seen below.

Add an accent furniture piece

Adding a bright blue couch could be just what your living room needs to brighten up. To save money, you don't even need to buy a brand new couch, you can buy your fabric and upholster an old chair yourself! Check out some tutorials online if the task seems to be daunting. Just like the pillows, you can go solid or patterned and for an added touch match the color of your accent chair to the pattern on your pillows.

Get a piece of art

The simplest way to add color that people sometimes forget about is to add a nice painting to your living room, bedroom, or even kitchen. You can buy a cheap painting online, or for a fun activity to gather all your roommates and paint some canvases together! A nice way to incorporate a painting in your living room is to get a giant canvas and position is centered over the couch. It is a simple way to cover a large part of your wall and incorporate fun colors.

As you can see, brightening up your space is not nearly as daunting of a task as it was before. With these few simple additions, you can add a pop of color to nearly any room!
