Tis the Season… Or Not Yet?

The age-old war that is waged as soon as Halloween ends is upon us once again. The question: Does the Christmas season begin on November 1st, or does it start after Thanksgiving?

I am a firm believer that November 1st is the start of the Christmas season. Thanksgiving is the pregame, and Christmas is the function.

When Christmas trees go up, the air cools down, and stores begin to play Christmas music, there's a sense of joy that fills the air. Why wouldn’t we want to celebrate for two months instead of one?

Now, I can see why people argue that Christmas doesn’t begin until after Thanksgiving. They want to appreciate fall and give Thanksgiving its moment.

Thanksgiving is a great time to celebrate the fall season, wearing earth tone colors and enjoying the slightly cooler weather before all the leaves fall off the trees.

On the other hand, Thanksgiving is part of the Christmas celebration. Christmas trees lighting up the house, Black Friday is the perfect time to get Christmas presents.

Prolonging the Christmas season reduces the level of stress, giving people more time to shop, decorate, plan, etc.

Since this is a very black and white choice, some people choose to compromise. Choosing instead to believe Christmas starts on the first snowfall (if you don’t live in Florida of course) or after the Thanksgiving Day Parade, allowing Thanksgiving to have its moment and respecting the holiday.

It’s a classic debate that will continue to surface the moment the clock strikes twelve on November 1st. So what side are you on?

I think it’s clear which side you’ll find me. From me to you (in the words of Mariah Carey): it’s tiiiime!
