I Love Period Dramas, and I am Not Afraid to Say It

The worst thing to hear when you are swooning over two characters sharing heated stares at a ball is someone in your ear telling you, “It’s not historically accurate.”
In the year 2026, I am not watching a Regency era show for accuracy. I am here for the drama! Whether you want to admit it, period dramas know how to do tension best.
Bridgerton, Outlander, Reign, Downton Abbey, I love them all! The costumes, the casting, the romance, the intense yearning in a single graze of their pinkies… it is unlike anything else. Add in the drama from politics and societal rules.
Something that I think I love the most about period dramas is that, because they aren’t accurate, they have the best aspects of current society. The beautiful makeup and costumes are something that would never be shown if we were watching an accurate depiction. Alongside this, the inclusivity, specifically Bridgerton’s. The incorporation of POC and LGBTQ+ adds a level of intrigue and modern societal evolution that is so appreciated.
And before you ask, I am a Michela and Francesca stan.
When I watch Outlander and Reign, shows set between the 16th and 18th centuries, I am there for the exaggerated depictions of royal hierarchy and Scottish clans. Where else am I going to watch the beautiful Jaime Fraser yearn after Clarie? Or (rolling my eyes before I say this), the made-up version of Mary Queen of Scots put everyone in their place?
All this to say, I love period dramas and I’m not afraid to say it. So, if you’ll excuse me, I am going to rewatch Kanthony fight out their sexual tension for the millionth time.
