Letting Yourself Let Go

As I enter a transformative era of my life, I often find it difficult to let go of the past. Whether it be the decisions I made, the hardships I faced, or even the minuscule problems I thought would be life-defining moments. It feels as though holding on to the moments and memories that shaped you, whether good or bad, can bring you peace.

Sometimes the lack of closure regarding a situation keeps us from moving on, forcing us to hold onto something that is not there anymore. We often replay moments in our heads, wishing we could do things differently, in hopes that our choices will make sense in the long run. However, in doing this, we anchor ourselves to a stagnant moment in our lives. A time that cannot be replicated in the same way it once did.

To “Let Go” is more than releasing a short memory of a time that once was. It is letting yourself move on, mind, body, and soul, from an era that is no longer part of who you are. By doing this, you are able to look towards the future with a sense of hope, a sense of grace for the old version of yourself.

Oftentimes, we find ourselves reiterating the idea that holding on to something means that we care for it. While that is true, there is also a difference between honoring something or someone that once was such a vital part of our lives and understanding that our lives are constantly changing, and we, along with those around us, will come and go.

Closure is not something that is guaranteed in life. I can speak for the masses when I say there are many instances where I could not help but sit and wonder what would happen if certain aspects of my life went a different way. Most times, I have learned I have to create closure for myself, because otherwise there would be no culmination to the story. It is the quiet, yet most heroic thing we can do for ourselves; to stop searching for answers, and simply let go.

Many people confuse “letting go” with “forgetting”.

I would argue that the two are not synonymous with each other, and rather, it is the act of understanding that some facets of life were never meant to stay in the first place.

Some chapters of our lives require more reading between the lines than others. Taking a closer look at the highs and lows of life can oftentimes lead us to a point of tranquility and teach us valuable lessons to learn from.

Letting go is the most courageous thing we can do in a life where all we crave is something or someone permanent. And maybe growth is not about turning into someone completely new with different ideologies, but instead it is having the strength to release what no longer aligns with us as individuals.
