Likes Don’t Lie

In the early 2000s and 2010s, the use of apps like Tumblr and Instagram was a way to curate your vibe publicly for the world to see. We then witnessed social media transform into an era of perfectly edited and angle-flattering images in recent years, but the modern spin of social media is bringing back a Pinterest-worthy feed, where your page represents your interests and overall curation of images. The idea of a ‘photo diary’, a culmination of candid photos, is taking over social media. It is replacing "picture perfect" images with an array of colors, patterns, places, and interests that make your feed uniquely you.

Everything old is new again, authenticity is back, evoking a real feeling. Uploading a photo diary is making your profile more personal, with your followers having to pause and unravel your images and the lifestyle you are portraying. We have tapped into a 7th sense in which the popularity of “Instagram models” is waning, and the images we are sharing and experiencing are infinitely more organic. Intuition is leading our new connections online, and as you scroll your feed, you can perceive a distinct kinship and vibe and immediately click “follow.”

Your favorite niches that make you unique are now at the forefront of your online persona, and your presence is becoming more personal than ever. Apps like Tumblr, Pinterest, and BeReal rose to popularity because of their distinct scrapbook-like feeds promoting true connectivity, deeming images edited to gain mass attention or viral like counts obsolete. Instead, these apps felt more personal to the user, and profiles reflected a true vibe instead of catering to social perfectionism. Influencers like The Kardashians, pro athletes, and new generation actors set the guidelines for “knowing your angles” and what colors flatter you or attract the most attention. Authenticity was absent in the previous copycat style of knowing what would gain you more followers, and the chase for online fame. Every day, human profiles appeal more than ever to more mass audiences, capitalizing on the people you actually interact with and their personal lifestyles with you. Sharing your favorite coffee, your bedroom, flowers, events, and even outfits is now the wave of curation that more often than not lacks the face of the user themselves.

Your audience is now your best friend, the people who know your favorite artists, foods, and colors. Images are messy, and colors aren't adjusted for higher saturation or unrealistic filtering. We are masters of making small tweaks to adjust our digital journals to perfection, leaving behind a feed full of our full glam faces and most flattering poses. This new fad of social media is making interaction and connection easier than ever. In this new revolution of curation, what will your vibe be?
