Styling in Scotland: The Traitors’ Unexpected Fashion Sense

What’s better than watching your favorite reality television stars duke it out in a real-life game of Mafia while in the scenic castles of Scotland? Watching them battle it out in stylish outfits with all the glitz and glamor, of course!

The Traitors is a reality television show that features a plethora of former reality TV stars from shows such as Love Island, Survivor, Big Brother, etc., playing a real-life game of Among Us mixed with Mafia.

While the premise of the show is interesting enough, the aspect that has truly captured viewers’ attention is the wonderful and jaw-dropping fashion statements made by host Alan Cumming, and the contestants on the season as well.

Every episode, Alan Cumming is sporting a new Scottish-inspired outfit that can be described as flamboyant, theatrical, and downright perfection. The bold statements perfectly capture the main theme of the show, with the contestants each usually hiring their own personal stylist to make sure they are camera-ready in Scotland.

Alan Cumming’s stylist, Sam Spector, has been recognized internationally for his flawless designs and ideas he has brought to accentuate the show in the fashion world. Having a host as energetic as Alan, the fashion pieces he wears need to match his personality, and Sam Spector has done a fantastic job of this.

The show itself has even developed its own branding and theme that some viewers are calling “Traitor-core”. This style of fashion can be achieved with heavy wool textures and thick tweeds. Accessories are also a main focal point of Scottish fashion, such as fingerless gloves, chunky scarves, or even the infamous pendants, like the one Lisa Rinna, star of The Real Housewives of the Beverly Hills, used to “murder” former Survivor winner Yam Yam Arocho. (Unfortunately, leading to her banishment from the game.)

Personal bias aside, there has never been another television show like The Traitors, and there certainly never will be again. No other show has been able to draw in an audience by having well-known household names and being able to keep them coming back with something fresh every week, and the fashion behind the show is the reason why.

I know so many people who have little to no knowledge in the field of fashion, but after they watch The Traitors for a single episode, they are hooked to see what Alan is going to wear walking into breakfast.

It begs the question, how much of the media we consume goes back to fashion? I personally would argue a fair amount of the media we consume has some degree of revolving around fashion, whether we realize it or not.

What started as a niche little show I loved to watch has turned into a phenomenon in the world of reality television and fashion, two things I never would have imagined to intersect.
