Sweat That S**t Out!
It seems that in today’s society, the average college student is either one who parties all day long and goes to sleep at late hours of the night, or one who is up promptly at six in the morning for a hot yoga class and prioritizes their health and wellness.
But what if you are both? After all, the world should never question the duality of the college student.
We live in a world where influencers are pushing their healthy lifestyles onto their audience and declaring them the “proper way to live”. These aspects typically involve similar virtues, such as going to bed early, waking up early, avoiding alcohol, exercising more than once a day, etc.
Sure, it may be a lifestyle that suits some people well. No one will argue that waking up early and attending a hot yoga class will make you feel better, giving you the motivation to start your day strong and ending it just as well. But why does life have to be so cut and dry?
What happened to being a little messy in your early 20s? It seems everyone wants to live a life of prioritizing health and wellness, and yes, it is imperative. Still, a vast majority of college students have forgotten who they are and are attempting to live a life that will undoubtedly lead to a massive burnout before they hit the age of 30.
Going out for a few drinks with friends and attending a workout class the next morning is entirely valid, and I would argue that it might be healthier for the mind and soul in the long run.
It seems as though some students have this narrative that you can only be one or the other when it comes to being a party animal and a wellness addict. It certainly does not help that the most popular influencers you know might be close to your age, leading to a rabbit hole of doubt when it comes to the decisions that you make yourself.
Think about it. If you sit in your own inner thoughts and convince yourself that going out with your friends for a fun time to unwind and relax will undo every workout you have done in the last week, you might have bigger issues at hand.
Obviously, going out is not for everyone, just as a workout class at six in the morning is not for everyone either. There are a plethora of different people with different mindsets and goals in the world, and sometimes we meet individuals whose goals intersect with our own.
That is the beauty of learning about others and, more importantly, ourselves. We do not have to fit an exact mold of an idea we have in our head. There can be a balance in our lives without feeling guilty for having a little fun.
So yes, I might go out with friends and have a drink or two. You can be sure I will be at my hot yoga class early the next morning, mat in hand.
Life is all about balance, after all, and if you cannot balance wellness and fun, can you truly understand either of them?
